Hello, my lovely friends! I hope you are all having a good start of this week. My Monday was okay – I am just about to do my night night routine after I do this post which is watching YouTube videos. 🙂

Bees Knees Recipes

Like all of us, Natalie encountered victory and disappointments from her kitchen experiments.

I’m constantly trying recipes, maybe 3-4 a day, in what sometimes feels like a small-scale test kitchen. I’ve had some great successes and disappointments from both simple and exotic ingredients.

Wow! 3-4 times a day? I hope I have this time, too. 😀 Going through her blog, I found out that she always manages to find time to make something sweet. Her latest share, Cranberry Coconut Macaroons, sound very good to me. I haven’t tried the combination of cranberries and coconut together, but I bet they are delicious.

The Fresh Princess

A princess like me who loves to cook and bake… and eat sweets, too. 😀

I’m a foodie with culinary ambitions. If only cooking and eating delicious food paid the rent for my tiny apartment, my life would be complete.

And yeah, she’s funny, too. 😀 And I love that! The Fresh Princess has this interesting popcorn on her blog – Buffalo Wing Popcorn. I hope she could send me some so I could try it, too. 😀

Bryony Cooks

Bryony is a culinary school graduate (how amazing) and baking is her passion. But she loves cooking, too… and having fun! 🙂

I love throwing ingredients together and seeing what happens and I’m not going to lie to you, I’ve probably had more failures than successes but that’s part of the fun, right?!

Bread-making is fun! But right now, I’d love to enjoy with a slice of this Orange Meringue Cake. 😀

A Cupcake for Love

Parvathy only started cooking after she found out that her husband is a complete foodie like her.

Food was never just about the way it tastes, but it encompasses every aspect of the world we live in today. Color, texture, aroma, quality, nutrition and the very experience of not just creating but also enjoying the feeling of sharing such a delightful journey is what food means to me.

The couple not only loves food, but they also love to travel and photography as well. No wonder this Home Style Butter Chicken look so absolutely mouth-watering to me. 😀

Char Siu Chicken

Chicken thighs marinated in a delicious marinade, baked until chicken skins are brown and crisp. Served with white rice and chili oil.

It’s funny that you want to cook/bake something, but the recipe has another recipe attached to it. I mean, there are other options you can do – choose another filling, use your go-to recipe or whatever that is… But then… you tell yourself ‘Oh la la! This attached recipe sounds really good! Okay, let’s make life a lot more complicated.‘ 😀

Also, that time, the trip to Macau and Hong Kong was still fresh and still haven’t forgotten all those foods – oh such a nightmare not to taste them again sooner. So, okay – let’s get Chinese.

I love Chinese food. I think most of us do. I mean, what’s not to love? Chinese foods taste really good! But I haven’t tried a Chinese BBQ. Well, maybe it’s just the same as the others. I don’t know. Only one way to find out – make it!

Char Siu literally means ‘fork-roast’. Traditionally, marinated meat slices are skewered on long forks and placed in a covered oven or over a fire to cook. In Hong Kong, Char Siu Chicken (or other meats) are displayed by hanging them inside a glass-window ‘box’ in restaurants.

I did not try one as I was busy trying other foods. 😀 It was a lovely feeling having to make this at home.

I used boneless and skinless chicken thighs because its my favorite part of the chicken. With those marinade, this came our really, really good! My cousin, who helped me with the photoshoot came on devouring the chicken as soon as I was done taking photos. I looked back at her and she was busy with the chicken and I was like ‘Okay! Wait! Wait! Here’s your rice!‘ Oh wow! No need for me to ask her how was the dish because I already knew the answer. 😀

For me, I enjoyed everything – the chicken, most especially the skin – the crisp skin full of amazing flavors, the Chili and Garlic Oil. Ahh, this Chili and Garlic Oil was fantastic and it paired very nicely with the Char Siu Chicken. If only my hands can work as fast as lightning, I would have finished off the chicken and make the same all over again for the other dish I was supposed to make.

When in Hong Kong and Macau, I noticed that meals are usually served with hot or cold tea… or warm water. So, to complete the experience, I also enjoyed my meal with delicious Jasmine tea. 😉

Char Siu Chicken - The Not So Creative Cook 2

Char Siu Chicken

  • Servings: 4-6
  • Difficulty: easy
  • Print


  • 6-8 chicken thighs, skinless and boneless*
  • 1/4 cup sugar
  • 2 tsp salt
  • 2 tsp soy sauce
  • 1 tbsp rice vinegar
  • 1/2 tsp sesame oil
  • 2 tbsp honey


  1. In a bowl, sugar, salt, soy sauce, rice vinegar and sesame oil.
  2. Place the chicken thighs in a ziplock bag or container and pour in the marinade. Marinade for 1 hour.
  3. Preheat the oven to 350 F.
  4. Line a baking pan with foil. Place the chicken pieces in one layer (skin side up). Roast for 45 minutes or until the chicken skin is brown and crisp. (Turn the baking pan halfway through, basting the chicken thighs with its juices.) (Optional: you can broil the chicken thighs after they have been cooked to the skins charred and enhance the color)
  5. Remove the pan from the oven and let rest for about 10 minutes.
  6. Serve with white rice, chili oil (recipe below) and a good cup of hot tea.

Note: You can use any meat you prefer.

Chili and Garlic Oil

Char Siu Chicken - The Not So Creative Cook 1Ingredients:

  • 1/2 tsp fine salt
  • 1 tbsp dried chili flakes
  • 3 tbsp vegetable oil (or any flavorless oil)
  • 3 cloves garlic, finely crushed


Mix all ingredients together. Store in a small airtight container. This can be kept at room temperature for one to two weeks.

Chocolate Banana Marble Bread

So you know the story of ripe bananas… they always turn into delicious treats. It happens to me all the time except when the others don’t want to get hot so they throw themselves in the blender and prefer to be mashed up for smoothies. I buy bananas almost every week. I love eating them without the black spots on the skin. When I see those spots, I speak to the bananas and tell them ‘So you will know what will happen to you, right?’ And they know.

The friendly bananas asked for some company this time and they want chocolate. So I said ‘Okay, you’ll have company this time.’ And marble bread came to mind.

Like the plain, old banana muffins and breads I’ve made before, I served this marble bread pancake syrup and a cup of coffee. Make this delicious bread and you’ll have the best of both worlds. 😉

Chocolate Banana Marble Bread


  • 2 cups all-purpose flour
  • 1 tbsp baking powder
  • ½ tsp salt
  • ½ cup unsalted butter, softened to room temperature
  • 1 cup packed light brown sugar
  • 2 large eggs
  • 2 tsp vanilla extract
  • 2 ripe bananas, mashed
  • 1 tbsp cocoa powder
  • 1/4 cup chocolate, melted
  • 1 tbsp vegetable oil
  1. Preheat the oven to 350 degrees. Spray a 9×5 inch loaf pan with non-stick spray. Set aside.
  2. In a bowl, sift flour, baking powder and salt. Set aside.
  3. In another bowl, combine butter and sugar. Mix until fluffy (about 2 minutes). Add eggs one at a time while beating after each addition. Add vanilla and mix until well combined. Slowly add the flour mixture while mixing.
  4. Remove 1 cup of the batter from the mixture and place in another bowl. Add cocoa powder, vegetable oil and melted chocolate. Mix well and set aside.
  5. To the remaining mixture, add the mashed bananas. Mix well.
  6. Pour 1/2 of the banana mixture into the prepared pan.
  7. Dividing the mixture into two, add spoonfuls of chocolate-flour mixture at the top of the banana mixture on the prepared pan.
  8. Add the remaining banana mixture on the chocolate-flour mixture.
  9. Last thing, add again spoonfuls of the chocolate mixture.
  10. Bake for 45-50 minutes or until a toothpick inserted in the middle comes out clean. Transfer to a wire rack to cool. Make sure to cool completely before slicing.

Tricky Tuesday #25

So, who doesn’t like to make kitchen life easier? I came across these wonderful tips and thought of sharing them to you. I have tried some of them already and it worked on me. For the others, I will definitely try them.

Retain Pasta Moisture

Okay, let’s say that you cooked pasta, but you did not finish everything. It is better to keep the pasta and the sauce separate when keeping them inside the fidge. That is to avoid having too mushy pasta dish. To retain pasta moisture after keeping them in the fridge, boil water in a pot and drop your pasta onto it and drain. Of course, you don’t have to do that for a long time. Just let the pasta stay in the boiling water for seconds and you’re done! I do that all the time and it works for me.

Get Rid of Soup Fat

I love soups and fatty ones, I must say that I love them, too. 😀 But less fat, the better. The last time I cooked this Nilagang Baka, I included beef with bones and fat… Well, yeah, I got fatty soup. To remove the fat, place the soup in the fridge and let it sit there for 30 minutes and the fat can be easily skimmed as it will harden. If you don’t have that much of time, you can drop a large lettuce on your pot of soup and the lettuce will absorb extra oil. Discard the leaf once the soup is fine with you.

Reviving Limp Vegetables

Having problems with limp vegetables? Throw them out. No! Not in the garbage tin. Throw them out in a bowl of iced water and add a slice of raw potato. The vegetable will ‘magically’ freshen up.

Reviving Cloudy Honey

I had a small jar of honey and I threw it! Ooopsss! The color has changed and I thought it was spoiled or something. I didn’t know that it was just ‘cloudy’. To revive honey or to make it clear again, place the amount of honey you need in a microwave safe bowl and microwave on medium heat for 30 seconds, and stir to check if it’s clear. If not, heat again for 30 seconds. You can also place the container of honey in a hot water, considering that the water will not melt the container.

Reviving Stale Muffins

It happens that you bake a batch of muffins and you did not finish them all. You can revive day-old muffins by sprinkling them with water. Then, place in a paper bag and microwave for 5-10 seconds. The water will produce a steam that will restore the moisture of the muffins.

Since, graduating from university and having full access to my mother’s kitchen again, I have built up a repertoire of cheesecake recipes.

Emily Cooks Vegan

Emily has been vegan for nine years now.

Growing up in a family associated in the hotel industry for generations and brilliant home-cooks, I am passionate over food, cooking and love to fuse different flavours and aromas in my cooking style.

What I love about Indian cuisine is they create food with so much flavor and they always look appetizing. They always create amazing sauce that you could almost imagine the taste – oh yum! Like this Mutton Baby Potato Curry – I can almost smell it from here. 😀

{Versions & Verdicts} Amanda’s 15-MINUTE HONEY PEPPER BEEF STIR FRY

Quick and easy stir fry beef with a sweet taste and a little kick. Perfect for busy cooks. 


When I started blogging, all I knew was cook and share! I didn’t know that copying the full recipe text from another blog/food site is not allowed by the owner. So you could tell me that I don’t read any other texts except the recipe posts.

Everything has changed now!

I started editing the recipes, but I cannot remember which one I did first. So lately, I’ve been busy with editing recipes. Uh, maybe not 100%, but I wrote them in my own words. And yes, I started from the beginning. I am not yet done and I don’t know when I’ll be done… But at least little by little. 🙂 It’s needs a long time, I know. But this recipe I am sharing now? Not at all. I mean – it can be done in 15 minutes!

15 Min Beef Stir Fry - TNSCC

So, you know Amanda from The Chunky Chef – who shares drool worthy recipes like these Beef Enchiladas with Homemade Enchilada Sauce?? Oh, so delicious! If only I am her neighbor, I’d come everyday knocking at her door. Or better yet, find a space inside her home. 😀

Let’s talk about this quick and easy recipe: it’s sweet with a little kick. Uh, okay! Sweet and spicy. Some white rice with this? Yes, please! And… you can prepare this in no time. Yeah! Like I said 15 minutes. I just added some nuts for the texture… well, because I am a texture girl. 😀 Okay, no sense! Let’s move on to the recipe…

15 Min Beef Stir Fry - TNSCC 2

And for your information, I also don’t know how to use chopsticks. So the chopsticks are for display purposes only. 😀

15-Minute Honey Pepper Beef Stir Fry

  • Difficulty: very easy
  • Print

  • 500g beef (tender part), sliced thinly, across the grain
  • 2 garlic cloves, minced
  • Onion, about 1/3 cup, sliced
  • 1 1/2 tbsp vegetable oil

For the sauce: 

  • 3 tbsp soy sauce
  • 3 tbsp honey
  • 1 1/2 tbsp oyster sauce
  • 1/2 cube beef cubes, dissolved in 2 tbsp water
  • 1 tsp sriracha sauce
  • 1/2 tsp ground black pepper
  • 1 tsp cornflour dissolved in 2 tbsp water
  1. In a small bowl, mix all the sauce ingredients except the cornflour-water mixture. Set aside.
  2. In a wok (or large heavy skillet) on a high heat, saute onion and garlic in for a minute, making sure not to burn them.
  3. Add the sliced flank steak and stir-fry for about one minute. (You may have to do this in batches if you have a smaller skillet.) Transfer to a plate and set aside.
  4. Over medium-high heat, add the sauce to the wok. Cook for one minute.
  5. Add the beef, onion and garlic back to the wok. Cook for about five minutes.
  6. Add the cornflour-water mixture and cook until thick.
  7. Sprinkle with sesame seeds and sliced spring onions just before serving.
  8. Add nuts if you desire.

Notes: You can prepare the sauce and slice the onions and garlic ahead of time and keep them in an airtight container inside the fridge and when you’re ready, you can start heating up that wok. 😉

Tricky Tuesday #24: Making Time For Your Blog

You might ask yourself ‘Seriously? A post about tips on making time for your blog from a blogger who has been MIA for months?’ And my answer is a big fat YES! 😀

I was on my way from work yesterday, the minions inside my brain were debating with each other on what to post after long months of being MIA for the Tricky Tuesdays series. One genius minion came up with this one. And the others were like ‘Seriously’?

See – I want to share something different than my usual shares before in which the post could also be a reminder for me more than anyone else… and this is what my genius minion suggested. Good one, I think. 🙂

For me, there are bloggers who blogs whenever they can and there are bloggers who badly wants to blog even if they have tight schedule. Count me on the latter. Making time for your blog may be difficult at times. But I believe that it’s all about priorities. So as I go on with the tips, I will share you my own, uh can I call it experiences? Okay, let’s do this…

Making Time for Your Blog - TNSCC

Make a Schedule 

Some of us are full-time workers and some of us are not. Either way, we are all busy with something. Making a schedule for your blog might help. As for me, I didn’t have one until recently. I was using office’s laptop and I didn’t (and still don’t) have my own. So I could say that I am blogging from work or only during the weekends when I take the laptop with me. But weekends means laundry, relaxing and lots of stuffs… so good luck with the blogging time. Few months back, my cousin got her own laptop which I must admit that I am the one who mostly use it because of my blog. So resting a little after work, I try to open my blog and do my thing.

Time Yourself

So here comes time management.

I could say that I was very good when it comes to time management. I mostly time everything I do – 2 hours for laundry, 1 hour for ironing clothes, 2 hours organizing/cleaning kitchen stuffs – you name it. And I stick to that time. Until one day, I can’t do it anymore that if I am in a class, I must have probably dropped it. A good friend told me that it is helpful that you time yourself.  And I told myself ‘You can do that! You were good at it.’ What I am saying is you divide your time. You can blog an hour or two in a day, depending on how tight your day is. At least make time… and by doing so, you check off some of your ‘to-blog’ list.

Prioritize Your Posts

Why did I start blogging? The answer is because I wanted to share my recipes and my versions of recipes… and somehow to inspire others. Then blogging buddies came – you learn things and your see how you can inspire and encourage others. Here comes the idea of me having a series called ‘Meet New Bloggers‘. And I thought that ‘Tricky Tuesdays‘ would be somehow useful, so I added it to my blog. Then ‘Versions & Verdicts‘ came… ‘In My Kitchen‘ came… and maybe something else will come. I don’t know. So it is important to know your priorities or let me rephrase that – know what you can do for the day, which doesn’t take that much of your time? or which doesn’t need a lot of thinking? Well, things like that. In my case, my first thing is recipe posts. Why? Because it doesn’t need ‘searching’ like what I do in the ‘Meet New Bloggers‘ series and ‘Tricky Tuesdays‘. Also, in recipe posts, I can do ‘mental blogging’ which I’d discuss in a bit. I also cook/bake during the weekends and all I have to do is take photos, write/edit the recipe and you’re done.

Mental Blogging 

Who does this? 😀 So when I am cooking or baking, I mentally write on what to blah blah blah when I publish the recipe. I do this whenever I can – before going to sleep, while walking from work to home, on the bus and even while I am taking a shower. Whatever I do, mental blogging is always there. Good thing that when my boss asks me, I don’t answer him anything about the blog. 😀 So, you know what I mean, yeah?

Plan Ahead

Another thing where I am good at – planning!

You can have a small notebook or you can write what do you want to cook/bake/post anywhere you want. You can also write topics you want to discuss. As for me, I always plan what I want to cook/bake during the weekends. When I am done cooking/baking, I write down the recipe posts/titles and put them on schedule. So I could tell you that I have few drafts in my mind (yeah, mental blogging) that I need to actually put on the WordPress drafts soon. 😀 So after that, you can make a new plan/schedule. 😉

The Wholesome Dime

For me, eating healthy and staying healthy is expensive. Well, maybe because I really haven’t really tried budgeting on healthy foods. I am glad that these two have an awesome blog:

Trouble is, eating well and staying healthy can be expensive, and we’re not made of money! That’s why we created The Wholesome Dime. A place to share our ideas for awesome food and wellbeing which won’t break the bank.

Healthy and not expensive? Count me in. 😉 Sugar-Free Brownie Cakes? You should definitely count me in.

The Baking Hermit

It is really lovely to read wonderful stories on how one was inspired by others – in baking or cooking (or some other things).

Baking is a hobby I have been wanting to pick up for years, but had somehow always found reasons to procrastinate. Until one fateful evening, when I was out celebrating my birthday with a few friends, and one friend showed me a picture of a beautiful rainbow cake covered in torched meringue, baked by his very talented (then) 12-year-old nephew! That very night, I came home and bought the oven I had been eyeing for years.

Like The Baking Hermit, I just started baking few years ago. And I am very impressed with this beautiful Garlic and Spring Onions Challah Bread.

A Bag of Flour

Flour is one of most essential ingredients in Anne’s kitchen because she loved baked goodies and she makes her own bread. How amazing!

I get ridiculously excited about making kitchen staples at home, whether it’s homemade butter, yogurt, cheese, vinegar, extracts, or pasta, you name it. I believe in good and honest food and I try to use as much seasonal and local produce as I can. When you make things from scratch, you know exactly what you are getting, and there is just something very special about enjoying a slice of freshly baked bread with your own homemade butter and jam.

Cheers to homemade foods! 😀 And that is why I am happy to see Anne’s Vegetable Stock.

Marisa’s Italian Kitchen

Marisa not only shares Italian recipes, but also others as well. She has something for all those sweet tooth of yours and some savory, too.

With her gone, so too are all her recipes. This blog will be a journey of re-creating meals that trigger memories from childhood.  A fusion of two cultures, Italian and Canadian. It will also serve as an archive of my most requested recipes. From comfort food to soul nourishing meals to sweet baked delights, I hope to inspire new beginners to believe in what they can achieve, in their own kitchen.

Well, you know I am a sweet tooth, but right now I’ll take this Turkey Meatball Soup. Oh so delicious that I wish I have a bowl of this soup in front of me right now.

The Great Escape: Macau

The third day is a short trip to Macau.

Macau is derived the the word ‘Magao’ (A-Ma Temple), a shrine dedicated to the sea goddess named Mazu. Macau is also well known for its luxurious hotel housing and gambling casinos. The Portuguese ruled the country for nearly 400 years until it was returned to China on 1999. There are interesting attractions in Macau and that’s where I am going to take you. 😉

Heading to Macau from Hong Kong, we went to the Ferry Terminal to let the ferry take us to the City of Dreams.

The inside of the ferry is okay. I was not used to riding ferry, so I slept during the travel. And because I was so exhausted.

But before I slept, I enjoyed the view first as I was sitting on the window side. Yay! I really want on the window side – every single time. 😀


Upon arriving at Macau Ferry Terminal, our tour guide, Mr. Kenny, brought us to the first stop: Ruins of St. Paul. Ruins of St. Paul was considered the greatest church in Macau, but it was burned down. Built again and burned down. According to Mr. Kenny, it happened several times.

We entered at the back side so we did not take the stairs going to Ruins of St. Paul’s. But when Mr. Kenny said that there’s a shop near the attraction which sells Portuguese Egg Tarts and Moon Cakes, I run happily. 😀 Besides, what’s the trip to Macau without Portuguese Egg Tarts?






After getting Portuguese Egg Tarts and Moon Cakes, we headed to our lunch.



Well, that was supposed to be noticed before leaving the table. But because we were too hungry, I did even see that there’s something like this on the table and left our bags on the chair. Lucky, nothing bad happened.

Oh my! The foods were amazing!! If only we planned to stay until the next day in Macau, I should have stayed in this restaurant a little longer and ate a lot. 😀 The good thing was, I did not eat a lot. But I really enjoyed everything I ate.



Noodles, pineapple rice and fried fish fillet. The pineapple rice was so insanely good that I am planning to make my own pineapple rice at home. (Stay tuned! Haha!)


And if I remember it correctly, this is something called Portuguese Chicken Curry… which I am also planning to recreate. Oh so delicious!!


After lunch, we went to see Macau Tower and we passed by the statue of the sea goddess.



So I tried to take photos of Macau Tower and I mean I tried many shots to get the full tower, but I failed… only to pass by this view. I looked like a crazy person who tried to get pretty shots, haha!


On to A-Ma Temple…

This is in front of A-Ma Temple which was used to be a pier during the Portuguese times in Macau.



I was at first afraid to go inside. Maybe because I was wearing head scarf and I was not sure on how people would react if they see me inside, in case they’d react. Despite of that feeling, I still went inside. Well, there were people looking, but I really didn’t care. 😀




Okay… So I was intrigued by what they were doing here. This family tried something really interesting. See that guy wearing blue shirt? He took a coin and threw it on this big bowl or and the water inside shook. And when the others tried, nothing happened. I don’t know about you, but it was my first time to witness something like this, so I was like ‘Wow! How that happened?’


Last stop is at The Venetian. The place is very elegant and very crowded.


And I think it’s because of this casino inside. I don’t do casino and of course, I haven’t went inside a casino. I just see such places in movies. We were allowed to go inside, but no taking of photos. And wow! Really a beautiful place. Maybe if only I knew how to play, I would have tried even the slot machine. 😀 You know, just for fun. But I don’t.

So before heading back to Hong Kong for our last night, we stayed at the food court – not to eat, but to sit down and get a wifi connection. 😛 There were so many foods to choose from, but I was too tired to eat.


And I took photos of the Moon Cakes and the Portuguese Egg Tarts.

It was my first time to eat Moon cake and I didn’t know that there are various kinds of filling which I should have taken the red bean ones, if I knew. Moon Cakes are eaten during the Mid-Autumn Festival and we were lucky that it was the time of the Moon Cake Festival when we went to visit Macau.


The Portuguese Egg Tarts were buttery and egg-y. Of course, they’re Egg Tarts, you crazy! 😀 They were delicious… I think I ate eleven of them. Ssshhhh! 😀

So… do you know the feeling of seeing these cute moon cakes while I have already got some? And I mean little expensive ones? No, I did not buy any of these… although I really wanted to. 😦 I saw these at Hong Kong ferry terminal. Of course, we got ourselves little treats but not one of these.


It was funny that our tour guide did not mention that there are two ferry terminals – one in Hong Kong and the other one is in Kowloon. So we picked the one in Hong Kong. We spent minutes of finding the taxi stand where we were dropped in the morning, but we did not find it and even the place is somewhat different. So we guessed that we took the wrong one. 😀 It was tiring, but funny.
